2. Constructional Features

  • Yoke: Provides mechanical support and serves as the magnetic return path.
  • Main poles: Support the field windings and establish the motor's magnetic field.
  • Series field winding: Connected in series with the armature so that the same current flows through both circuits.
  • Armature core: Laminated steel core designed to reduce eddy-current losses.
  • Armature winding: Carries current and interacts with the magnetic field to produce torque.
  • Commutator: Reverses current in the appropriate armature conductors to maintain unidirectional torque.
  • Brush assembly: Provides electrical contact between the stationary supply circuit and rotating commutator.
  • Single shaft: Provides the mechanical output arrangement.
  • Cut-section construction: Exposes selected internal components for visual inspection and teaching.
  • Metal mounting base: Provides a stable platform for laboratory demonstrations.

3. Experiments and Learning Objectives

The AL-E453 DC Series Motor is suitable for the following educational activities:

  1. Study of DC series motor construction and operation.
  2. Identification of the yoke, poles, armature, commutator, and brushes.
  3. Study of series field winding connections.
  4. Understanding the electromagnetic torque-generation principle.
  5. Study of the relationship between armature current, field flux, and torque.
  6. Observation of the commutation process.
  7. Study of the speed characteristics of a DC series motor using a suitable test arrangement.
  8. Comparison of DC series, shunt, and compound motor characteristics.
  9. Identification of motor terminals and interpretation of connection diagrams.

4. Working Principle

A DC series motor operates on the principle that a current-carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field experiences a force. The series field winding is connected in series with the armature, so the same current passes through both.

The interaction between the magnetic field and armature current produces electromagnetic torque, causing the shaft to rotate.

The developed torque is approximately:

Safety note: A DC series motor should not be operated without an appropriate mechanical load, because its speed can rise to a dangerous level under no-load conditions.

5. General Requirements

  • Suitable for electrical machines laboratories, engineering colleges, polytechnics, and technical training institutes.
  • Robust construction suitable for repeated educational demonstrations.
  • Internal motor components clearly visible through cutaway sections.
  • Clearly identified armature and series field terminals.
  • Secure mounting on a rigid metal base.
  • Suitable for supervised laboratory operation with appropriate DC electrical protection.

6. Specification Verification

The following details should be confirmed before formal tender submission:

  • Rated speed: Verify the specified 1440 RPM against the manufacturer's nameplate and rated operating conditions.
  • Terminal arrangement: Confirm the four BTI 15 terminals and actual wiring diagram.
  • Enclosure and protection: Verify the designations SPDP and IP23.
  • Cooling classification: Confirm IC01 against the manufacturer's documentation.
  • Frame size and mounting: Verify frame size 132 and B3 mounting against the actual product.

The specifications above retain the supplied ratings and designations, with uncertain classifications marked for verification.
