3. Construction and Functional Details
3.1 Mechanical Assembly
The apparatus shall have a
stable triangular base supporting a main steel pillar. The pillar shall
accommodate the lamp house, condenser assembly, microscope and atomizer system.
3.2 Illumination System
The lamp house shall enclose
a 6 V, 21 W lamp and a condenser lens to illuminate the oil drops. Horizontal
positioning shall be possible using a slow-motion screw.
3.3 Microscope and Measurement System
The microscope shall be
mounted opposite the lamp house and provide rough and fine positioning in the
horizontal plane, fine vertical adjustment and rack-and-pinion focusing. A
vertical micrometer scale shall be provided near the eyepiece to facilitate
observation and measurement of oil-drop movement.
3.4 Condenser Plate Assembly
The condenser plates shall be
made of brass and mounted at the top of the central pillar. The assembly shall
be electrically insulated from the rest of the apparatus. The upper plate shall
include a small aperture for introducing oil drops, and the plates shall have
an approximate separation of 6–7 mm. Electrical terminals shall be provided for
power-supply connections.
3.5 Oil Atomizer
The atomizer shall consist of
an aluminium box containing olive oil, mounted on a steel rod, for introducing
fine oil droplets into the condenser chamber.
4. Scope of Learning
·
Study of Millikan’s
oil drop experiment.
·
Observation of
charged oil drops under illumination.
·
Measurement of
oil-drop movement using the microscope and micrometer scale.
·
Determination of the
elementary electric charge using Millikan’s method.
